Narrative:

We were level at FL370 with ZAB. The ride was terrible. FL410 was reported smooth. We were filed for and capable of FL410, so we requested a climb. Initial climb rate in VNAV was 1000 FPM. Soon after beginning climb, ATC asked if we could be level at FL410 in 5 mins. I replied affirmative. Passing FL390, however, the ride and subsequently our climb rate deteriorated. Still, I thought we would make our 5 min restr. However, such was not going to be the case and I advised center around FL400 that we would not be able to reach FL410 in allotted time. He then cleared conflicting opposite direction traffic to descend to FL390. We had the traffic in sight and there appeared to be no loss of separation.

Title: AFTER REQUESTING A CLB TO FL410 FOR SMOOTHER AIR, A B737 CREW WAS UNABLE TO REACH THE ALT IN THE REQUIRED 5 MINS.

Narrative: WE WERE LEVEL AT FL370 WITH ZAB. THE RIDE WAS TERRIBLE. FL410 WAS RPTED SMOOTH. WE WERE FILED FOR AND CAPABLE OF FL410, SO WE REQUESTED A CLB. INITIAL CLB RATE IN VNAV WAS 1000 FPM. SOON AFTER BEGINNING CLB, ATC ASKED IF WE COULD BE LEVEL AT FL410 IN 5 MINS. I REPLIED AFFIRMATIVE. PASSING FL390, HOWEVER, THE RIDE AND SUBSEQUENTLY OUR CLB RATE DETERIORATED. STILL, I THOUGHT WE WOULD MAKE OUR 5 MIN RESTR. HOWEVER, SUCH WAS NOT GOING TO BE THE CASE AND I ADVISED CTR AROUND FL400 THAT WE WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO REACH FL410 IN ALLOTTED TIME. HE THEN CLRED CONFLICTING OPPOSITE DIRECTION TFC TO DSND TO FL390. WE HAD THE TFC IN SIGHT AND THERE APPEARED TO BE NO LOSS OF SEPARATION.
