Narrative:

I was on an IFR flight plan to north eleuthra when the owner decided he wanted to go to fajardo, pr. I changed my flight plan with center and proceeded to tjfa. When we were close to tjfa, I was vectored for the descent to 100 degrees. After I cleared a cloud bank, ZSU turned me to 150 degrees and told me the airport was straight ahead. Having not been there before, I told them I had tjfa in sight, not realizing I was so close to roosevelt roads NAS. ZSU cleared me for the visual, since tjfa was uncontrolled. I called for an airport advisory, no answer. I came in for a right downwind to runway 7 (mountains to the west). When I was just about to touch down, I saw it was runway 8 and touched down, but it was too late. I realized I was at the wrong airport. I turned off on the first taxiway and was met by emergency equipment and was stopped (big embarrassment), then came the paperwork. We filled out the paperwork and answered some questions and were free to go to tjfa 3 mi to the northeast, inside roosevelt's airspace. This has been the most humiliating moment in my 19 yrs of flying. I have preached to my students over the yrs about situational awareness and knowing exactly where you are at all times. The teacher is humbled. Tjfa was snuggled back in a cove 3 mi to the northeast. I had a picture of tjfa. Their runways line up basically the same, but not nearly as large. I was told by the commander that it happens quite often there. I was thinking that, if it happens that often, approach control would be a little bit tighter and remind pilots of the NAS before turning them loose for the visual to tjfa. I'm certainly not shirking my responsibility as PIC, but we're all prone to make a mistake now and then. Since the airports are so close, it would be very, very helpful for the safety of all. I will certainly do my part from here on out to make myself more aware.

Title: A PC12 PLT LANDED ON A NAVAL AIR STATION (TJNR NAS) THAT HE HAD MISTAKEN FOR TJFA.

Narrative: I WAS ON AN IFR FLT PLAN TO NORTH ELEUTHRA WHEN THE OWNER DECIDED HE WANTED TO GO TO FAJARDO, PR. I CHANGED MY FLT PLAN WITH CTR AND PROCEEDED TO TJFA. WHEN WE WERE CLOSE TO TJFA, I WAS VECTORED FOR THE DSCNT TO 100 DEGS. AFTER I CLRED A CLOUD BANK, ZSU TURNED ME TO 150 DEGS AND TOLD ME THE ARPT WAS STRAIGHT AHEAD. HAVING NOT BEEN THERE BEFORE, I TOLD THEM I HAD TJFA IN SIGHT, NOT REALIZING I WAS SO CLOSE TO ROOSEVELT ROADS NAS. ZSU CLRED ME FOR THE VISUAL, SINCE TJFA WAS UNCTLED. I CALLED FOR AN ARPT ADVISORY, NO ANSWER. I CAME IN FOR A R DOWNWIND TO RWY 7 (MOUNTAINS TO THE W). WHEN I WAS JUST ABOUT TO TOUCH DOWN, I SAW IT WAS RWY 8 AND TOUCHED DOWN, BUT IT WAS TOO LATE. I REALIZED I WAS AT THE WRONG ARPT. I TURNED OFF ON THE FIRST TXWY AND WAS MET BY EMER EQUIP AND WAS STOPPED (BIG EMBARRASSMENT), THEN CAME THE PAPERWORK. WE FILLED OUT THE PAPERWORK AND ANSWERED SOME QUESTIONS AND WERE FREE TO GO TO TJFA 3 MI TO THE NE, INSIDE ROOSEVELT'S AIRSPACE. TJFA WAS SNUGGLED BACK IN A COVE 3 MI TO THE NE. I HAD A PICTURE OF TJFA. THEIR RWYS LINE UP BASICALLY THE SAME, BUT NOT NEARLY AS LARGE. I WAS TOLD BY THE COMMANDER THAT IT HAPPENS QUITE OFTEN THERE. I WAS THINKING THAT, IF IT HAPPENS THAT OFTEN, APCH CTL WOULD BE A LITTLE BIT TIGHTER AND REMIND PLTS OF THE NAS BEFORE TURNING THEM LOOSE FOR THE VISUAL TO TJFA. I'M CERTAINLY NOT SHIRKING MY RESPONSIBILITY AS PIC, BUT WE'RE ALL PRONE TO MAKE A MISTAKE NOW AND THEN. SINCE THE ARPTS ARE SO CLOSE, IT WOULD BE VERY, VERY HELPFUL FOR THE SAFETY OF ALL. I WILL CERTAINLY DO MY PART FROM HERE ON OUT TO MAKE MYSELF MORE AWARE.
