Narrative:
I contacted ground for a VFR departure. I started taxiing east on taxiway D. I thought the controller asked me to turn on the next crossing, which was taxiway M, and proceeded south for runway 35. I did not have an airport diagram with me. I thought my turn was taking me across runway 8R to another taxiway. When I got on the runway, and did not see another exit, I started to taxi off as I advised the ground controller. He, instead, cleared me to depart on runway 8R, which I did with no incident. The controller said all was ok. I should have asked questions before I taxied onto the runway.

Title: OMF-100 PLT INADVERTENTLY TAXIES ONTO AN ACTIVE RWY AT GRR.
Narrative: I CONTACTED GND FOR A VFR DEP. I STARTED TAXIING E ON TXWY D. I THOUGHT THE CTLR ASKED ME TO TURN ON THE NEXT XING, WHICH WAS TXWY M, AND PROCEEDED S FOR RWY 35. I DID NOT HAVE AN ARPT DIAGRAM WITH ME. I THOUGHT MY TURN WAS TAKING ME ACROSS RWY 8R TO ANOTHER TXWY. WHEN I GOT ON THE RWY, AND DID NOT SEE ANOTHER EXIT, I STARTED TO TAXI OFF AS I ADVISED THE GND CTLR. HE, INSTEAD, CLRED ME TO DEPART ON RWY 8R, WHICH I DID WITH NO INCIDENT. THE CTLR SAID ALL WAS OK. I SHOULD HAVE ASKED QUESTIONS BEFORE I TAXIED ONTO THE RWY.
