Narrative:

I contacted ground for a VFR departure. I started taxiing east on taxiway D. I thought the controller asked me to turn on the next crossing, which was taxiway M, and proceeded south for runway 35. I did not have an airport diagram with me. I thought my turn was taking me across runway 8R to another taxiway. When I got on the runway, and did not see another exit, I started to taxi off as I advised the ground controller. He, instead, cleared me to depart on runway 8R, which I did with no incident. The controller said all was ok. I should have asked questions before I taxied onto the runway.
