Narrative:
I was cleared to taxi from FBO via taxiway a. Right on taxiway A4, cross runway 5 , right taxi, to runway 5L. I turned right on taxiway A4 and was not sure when I crossed runway 5 right, because no snow had been removed from that runway. When I looked at the airport diagram on the approach plate, I did not notice taxiway B. I thought I was to cross runway 5L and taxi southwest on the taxiway along the northwest side of runway 5L. When I crossed runway 5L, I noticed an airplane on final, and I knew that was not right. I should have studied the airport diagram more closely, and I would have known that I was supposed to use taxiway B. It was very cold and I started my engines and called ground before I was really ready. From now on, I will ask for progressive taxi instructions when I am at an unfamiliar airport. I don't think the ground controller said anything about taxiway B, but I could be wrong. The big problem was that I had a taxi route planned in my head that was not right. I was in a hurry, and there was ice and snow. I have been to 3 safety meetings on runway incursions, and didn't think I could be so stupid.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: RWY INCURSION BY A COMMERCIAL MERLIN III PLT TAXIING ON SNOW COVERED RWYS AND TXWYS AT TYS, TN.
Narrative: I WAS CLRED TO TAXI FROM FBO VIA TXWY A. R ON TXWY A4, CROSS RWY 5 , R TAXI, TO RWY 5L. I TURNED R ON TXWY A4 AND WAS NOT SURE WHEN I CROSSED RWY 5 R, BECAUSE NO SNOW HAD BEEN REMOVED FROM THAT RWY. WHEN I LOOKED AT THE ARPT DIAGRAM ON THE APCH PLATE, I DID NOT NOTICE TXWY B. I THOUGHT I WAS TO CROSS RWY 5L AND TAXI SW ON THE TXWY ALONG THE NW SIDE OF RWY 5L. WHEN I CROSSED RWY 5L, I NOTICED AN AIRPLANE ON FINAL, AND I KNEW THAT WAS NOT RIGHT. I SHOULD HAVE STUDIED THE ARPT DIAGRAM MORE CLOSELY, AND I WOULD HAVE KNOWN THAT I WAS SUPPOSED TO USE TXWY B. IT WAS VERY COLD AND I STARTED MY ENGS AND CALLED GND BEFORE I WAS REALLY READY. FROM NOW ON, I WILL ASK FOR PROGRESSIVE TAXI INSTRUCTIONS WHEN I AM AT AN UNFAMILIAR ARPT. I DON'T THINK THE GND CTLR SAID ANYTHING ABOUT TXWY B, BUT I COULD BE WRONG. THE BIG PROB WAS THAT I HAD A TAXI RTE PLANNED IN MY HEAD THAT WAS NOT RIGHT. I WAS IN A HURRY, AND THERE WAS ICE AND SNOW. I HAVE BEEN TO 3 SAFETY MEETINGS ON RWY INCURSIONS, AND DIDN'T THINK I COULD BE SO STUPID.
