Narrative:

Departing ont on pomona 6 departure, climbing to 14000 ft, FMS changed to direct daggett instead of tracking to pomona and flying outbound 301 degree radial. Controller (lax) questioned turns and direction aircraft was flying. Crew asked ATC for turn (heading) and was told to fly pomona 6 departure. Crew then began checking position via navigation radials and DME. ATC then gave crew a 280 degree heading to get re-established on departure. Crew re-entered waypoints on departure and flew transition to daggett. Crew thought ATC could be more helpful in this situation.
