Narrative:

Late descent. Controller answered repeated requests to descend with queries of several other aircraft for their position/altitudes. After several run-throughs, we finally were cleared to descend only 50 mi out. Other aircraft met similar confusion. Approaching aba, we further requested instructions as to hold, proceed to bea, to tnca, or to maintain heading without a definitive reply. We ended up overflying the field to the southwest and returning to land under our own volition with coordination from beatrix tower. All occurred under VMC. Landed without further incident.
