Narrative:
At 17000 ft, the left engine appeared to compressor stall after throttles were retarded to start our descent. The egt pegged at approximately 800 degrees C and some vibration was noted. Engine failure checklist was run. Engine was shut down, and we returned to dtw. Left engine suffered a catastrophic failure.

Narrative: AT 17000 FT, THE L ENG APPEARED TO COMPRESSOR STALL AFTER THROTTLES WERE RETARDED TO START OUR DSCNT. THE EGT PEGGED AT APPROX 800 DEGS C AND SOME VIBRATION WAS NOTED. ENG FAILURE CHKLIST WAS RUN. ENG WAS SHUT DOWN, AND WE RETURNED TO DTW. L ENG SUFFERED A CATASTROPHIC FAILURE.
