At 17000 ft, the left engine appeared to compressor stall after throttles were retarded to start our descent. The egt pegged at approximately 800 degrees C and some vibration was noted. Engine failure checklist was run. Engine was shut down, and we returned to dtw. Left engine suffered a catastrophic failure.
