Narrative:
Captain's oxygen mask box which contains test function for oxygen mask was defective. I instructed contract maintenance to swap the box and mask from the second observer's position to the captain's position. Work was performed per airbus maintenance manual 35-12-41-400-001. Inoperative'ed second observer seat per MEL. I was informed later that swapping oxygen mask is acceptable, swapping the box is not acceptable, per the local pmi.

Title: AN AIRBUS 319 MECH SWAPPED THE CAPT'S OXYGEN MASK BOX WITH THE SECOND OBSERVER'S BOX AND DEFERRED THE OBSERVER'S SEAT PER THE MEL.
Narrative: CAPT'S OXYGEN MASK BOX WHICH CONTAINS TEST FUNCTION FOR OXYGEN MASK WAS DEFECTIVE. I INSTRUCTED CONTRACT MAINT TO SWAP THE BOX AND MASK FROM THE SECOND OBSERVER'S POS TO THE CAPT'S POS. WORK WAS PERFORMED PER AIRBUS MAINT MANUAL 35-12-41-400-001. INOP'ED SECOND OBSERVER SEAT PER MEL. I WAS INFORMED LATER THAT SWAPPING OXYGEN MASK IS ACCEPTABLE, SWAPPING THE BOX IS NOT ACCEPTABLE, PER THE LCL PMI.
