Narrative:

14 hour duty day. This is in regard to the 14 hour duty day. I know about my legality for the 16 hour day. Our duty day began at XA57 in mci. With WX in ord, our trip got reassigned to an lga turn instead of an mia turn out of ord. After many delays, we arrived at XK04 in lga. I called clearance immediately on gate arrival to find out any more known delays. I was told the edct was to be XN43. My contention was that we were done because that would take us past our 14 hour duty period on arrival into ord. Our 14 hour duty day would end at XN57. By moving back from that number, subtracting planned flight time of 2 hours and 6 mins, and 15 mins for the debriefs, and 8 mins for the taxi in, our wheels up time would have to be set at or before XL28. Dispatch told us the edct was XM20, even though it is a 34 hour duty day. I could not put my finger on anything relating to known delays taking you beyond the 14 hour day, nor could I find anything on the reassignment. All is related to crew schedule. Am I missing something? We finally ended up departing at about XM15. This flight had strong headwinds, coupled with holding, and waiting for a gate. We blocked in at XP16, plus 15 mins for debrief which gave us a 15 hour 34 min duty day. Can you leave the gate under the contractual 14 hour duty day?
