Narrative:

Climbing through FL300, crew heard a loud bang. Aircraft yawed to the left. Almost instantaneous burning smell and some smoke in the cockpit. We received a call from 2 or more flight attendants to report flame from the left engine and smoke and fumes in the cabin. Crew noticed left engine egt rising rapidly. Captain accomplished engine surge checklist and directed first officer to declare an emergency and begin descent to kday. Engine stabilized at idle. Donned oxygen mask. There were no EICAS messages and no indication of fire. Captain made several PA's to passenger to reassure them and advise them of our intention to land in kday. Advised flight attendants they had approximately 10 mins to prepare for a possible emergency landing. Captain notified flight control of emergency and intentions through company radio. While turning base to runway 24R at kday, left engine failed completely. Captain turned off left fuel and ignition switch. Accomplished descent, approach, and before landing checklists. We landed with flaps 20 degrees and automatic brakes #2. Still no indication of fire. Smoke had dissipated during descent. We came to a full stop on the runway and requested inspection by fire department. They advised crew there were no flames, smoke, excessive heat or obvious damage to the engine. Captain elected not to evacuate/evacuation the aircraft and requested fire truck follow the aircraft to the gate. After shutdown, captain conferred with flight control and the maintenance coordinator. The decision was made to cancel the flight. Passenger were deplaned to be reaccommodated. There were no adverse passenger reactions or medical problems noted. Pilots conferred with operations and decided to deadhead to ZZZ to complete their rotation. Flight attendants were directed to deadhead to their home base.
