Narrative:

During a trip from ind to dpa we were communicating and under ZAU control. ZAU asked us to cross 15 mi east of the jot VOR at 4000 ft -- which we did. This was the last instruction from this controller. As we got closer to jot VOR, we heard an airliner on our frequency to contact chicago approach on 133.5 -- which we did. At that time, we received a conflict resolution on the TCASII to climb. Chicago approach queried us why we hadn't checked in sooner, where were we? We told the controller we never were xferred until now.
