Narrative:

E33A bonanza wbound near pomona, ca, VFR at 6500 ft, began a descent toward vny. About 1 min before reaching 6000 ft, at that time, the bonanza and 2 passenger noted an air carrier aircraft sbound at 2 O'clock position at same altitude. The bonanza made an immediate 45 degree and turn to the right to avoid closer proximity. The air carrier also appeared to make a moderate bank to the right (corrective action). The closest the 2 aircraft came was 1500-3000 ft (estimate of pilot of E33 bonanza) horizontally. Air was clear and smooth. The pilot and passenger aboard the E33 bonanza were alert and looking for traffic. The visibility was 7-10 mi. Socal approach noted the incident on radar and reported it to cma airport tower where ground notified the bonanza to call socal approach by phone. This was done by the pilot. He explained the incident to the socal approach supervisor. There were no other contributing factors. The supervisor was satisfied when told the bonanza was at 6000 ft because of the descent. Prevention of future occurrence: VFR flight following may have had some effect.
