Narrative:
I received my clearance from 4b9 to grotin from bradley approach on the ground at 4b9. When airborne, I contacted bdl approach and they gave me a direct to hfd. When I made this turn from a 330 degree heading to approximately 150 degrees heading, I noticed the directional gyro portion of the HSI failed to indicate the turn properly. I attempted to fast slave the dg without reliable success. This made the autoplt unreliable and I elected to hand fly the airplane, climbing to three thousand. I requested a 'no gyro' approach to bradley. During the consequent vectors, while hand flying and setting up the approach to runway 6 ILS, I inadvertently experienced an altitude deviation to about 200-250 ft below my assigned 3000 ft. The subsequent 'no gyro' approach was uneventful. Later in the day I checked the aircraft logs and discovered that my aztec aircraft was out of pitot static and transponder checks by 7 months for IFR flight. Check was due 03/02. At no time did bradley tower request a call from me upon landing. I can assume they appreciated the practice 'no gyro' approach.

Title: THE LOSS OF HIS DIRECTIONAL GYRO MANDATES THE PLT OF AN IFR IMC PA23 AZTEC TO REQUEST TO 'NO GYRO APCH' TO BDL, CT.
Narrative: I RECEIVED MY CLRNC FROM 4B9 TO GROTIN FROM BRADLEY APCH ON THE GND AT 4B9. WHEN AIRBORNE, I CONTACTED BDL APCH AND THEY GAVE ME A DIRECT TO HFD. WHEN I MADE THIS TURN FROM A 330 DEG HDG TO APPROX 150 DEGS HDG, I NOTICED THE DIRECTIONAL GYRO PORTION OF THE HSI FAILED TO INDICATE THE TURN PROPERLY. I ATTEMPTED TO FAST SLAVE THE DG WITHOUT RELIABLE SUCCESS. THIS MADE THE AUTOPLT UNRELIABLE AND I ELECTED TO HAND FLY THE AIRPLANE, CLIMBING TO THREE THOUSAND. I REQUESTED A 'NO GYRO' APCH TO BRADLEY. DURING THE CONSEQUENT VECTORS, WHILE HAND FLYING AND SETTING UP THE APCH TO RWY 6 ILS, I INADVERTENTLY EXPERIENCED AN ALT DEV TO ABOUT 200-250 FT BELOW MY ASSIGNED 3000 FT. THE SUBSEQUENT 'NO GYRO' APCH WAS UNEVENTFUL. LATER IN THE DAY I CHKED THE ACFT LOGS AND DISCOVERED THAT MY AZTEC ACFT WAS OUT OF PITOT STATIC AND XPONDER CHKS BY 7 MONTHS FOR IFR FLT. CHK WAS DUE 03/02. AT NO TIME DID BRADLEY TWR REQUEST A CALL FROM ME UPON LNDG. I CAN ASSUME THEY APPRECIATED THE PRACTICE 'NO GYRO' APCH.
