Narrative:

We were being vectored for localizer intercept at 2000 ft. I had selected 'approach' mode while on autoplt and was waiting for localizer intercept from about a 35 degree vector angle to the inbound course. At a distance of about 9 mi the ILS signal apparently became momentarily intermittent as I saw the needles shift around but then settle down. This momentary loss of signal must have uncoupled my altitude hold as the plane gradually climbed to 2600 ft. I believe the autoplt was now seeking the GS which was above us at this distance. It is worth noting that numerous buildings on somewhat higher terrain were between us and the runway at that distance and offset. Also no altitude alert chime was heard when the plane deviated from 2000 ft. My scan of basic flight parameters is now more frequent and I am less trusting of our very modern 'automatic' airplane.

IT IS WORTH NOTING THAT NUMEROUS BUILDINGS ON SOMEWHAT HIGHER TERRAIN WERE BTWN US AND THE RWY AT THAT DISTANCE AND OFFSET. ALSO NO ALT ALERT CHIME WAS HEARD WHEN THE PLANE DEVIATED FROM 2000 FT. MY SCAN OF BASIC FLT PARAMETERS IS NOW MORE FREQUENT AND I AM LESS TRUSTING OF OUR VERY MODERN 'AUTOMATIC' AIRPLANE.
