Narrative:

First aircraft that we attempted to use had bird strike damage found by our maintenance. Went to next gate and used an aircraft that had just been brought from hangar. Latest repair was replacement of captain's windshield. Departed sea and heard unusual noises, like a metallic ripping noise at 2000 ft and 10000 ft. Conferred with first officer and FAA jump seat rider. Decided to return to sea. Aircraft was examined by maintenance and found that temporary tape that was installed over putty had come off in climb out. There were 2 maintenance personnel working on aircraft. One mechanic signed off aircraft. Other mechanic did a little more research and found plane should probably not go until putty had cured a little longer. Called maintenance supervisor. I decided that we needed a different aircraft. In the end, we got to our destination with the third aircraft.

Title: B737-400 CREW HEARD RIPPING NOISES IN THE COCKPIT AFTER DEP.

Narrative: FIRST ACFT THAT WE ATTEMPTED TO USE HAD BIRD STRIKE DAMAGE FOUND BY OUR MAINT. WENT TO NEXT GATE AND USED AN ACFT THAT HAD JUST BEEN BROUGHT FROM HANGAR. LATEST REPAIR WAS REPLACEMENT OF CAPT'S WINDSHIELD. DEPARTED SEA AND HEARD UNUSUAL NOISES, LIKE A METALLIC RIPPING NOISE AT 2000 FT AND 10000 FT. CONFERRED WITH FO AND FAA JUMP SEAT RIDER. DECIDED TO RETURN TO SEA. ACFT WAS EXAMINED BY MAINT AND FOUND THAT TEMPORARY TAPE THAT WAS INSTALLED OVER PUTTY HAD COME OFF IN CLBOUT. THERE WERE 2 MAINT PERSONNEL WORKING ON ACFT. ONE MECH SIGNED OFF ACFT. OTHER MECH DID A LITTLE MORE RESEARCH AND FOUND PLANE SHOULD PROBABLY NOT GO UNTIL PUTTY HAD CURED A LITTLE LONGER. CALLED MAINT SUPVR. I DECIDED THAT WE NEEDED A DIFFERENT ACFT. IN THE END, WE GOT TO OUR DEST WITH THE THIRD ACFT.
