Narrative:

I was calling company operations shortly before reaching 10000 ft, since there is a hill that causes radio interference further out. When I came back on ATC frequency, we had been cleared to 8000 ft and switched to approach. The approach controller gave us a clearance to cross 28 DME from sjc at or above 8000 ft and cleared us for the visual approach to runway 30R. The captain dialed in 4300 ft, looked at the DME and started a descent. I told him something seemed wrong. He pointed to his DME which showed 22 NM DME. About that time, bay approach called and asked our DME. I responded '22 mi.' I quickly brought up the radio navigation page and realized the captain had been navigating off the sns VOR. I quickly entered sjc VOR and our DME showed 26. Our altitude was 6300 ft. Bay approach gave us a clearance to cross 17 DME at 5000 ft, which we complied with, and continued the approach without further incident.

Title: A320 FLC, INBOUND TO SJC, REF WRONG NAVAID DME AND INITIATE DSCNT PRIOR TO ASSIGNED O90 XING RESTR.

Narrative: I WAS CALLING COMPANY OPS SHORTLY BEFORE REACHING 10000 FT, SINCE THERE IS A HILL THAT CAUSES RADIO INTERFERENCE FURTHER OUT. WHEN I CAME BACK ON ATC FREQ, WE HAD BEEN CLRED TO 8000 FT AND SWITCHED TO APCH. THE APCH CTLR GAVE US A CLRNC TO CROSS 28 DME FROM SJC AT OR ABOVE 8000 FT AND CLRED US FOR THE VISUAL APCH TO RWY 30R. THE CAPT DIALED IN 4300 FT, LOOKED AT THE DME AND STARTED A DSCNT. I TOLD HIM SOMETHING SEEMED WRONG. HE POINTED TO HIS DME WHICH SHOWED 22 NM DME. ABOUT THAT TIME, BAY APCH CALLED AND ASKED OUR DME. I RESPONDED '22 MI.' I QUICKLY BROUGHT UP THE RADIO NAV PAGE AND REALIZED THE CAPT HAD BEEN NAVING OFF THE SNS VOR. I QUICKLY ENTERED SJC VOR AND OUR DME SHOWED 26. OUR ALT WAS 6300 FT. BAY APCH GAVE US A CLRNC TO CROSS 17 DME AT 5000 FT, WHICH WE COMPLIED WITH, AND CONTINUED THE APCH WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT.
