Narrative:

On sep/thu/02, I was the captain of flight abcd from phl to bos. We left the gate and were instructed by ramp control to taxi to spot X behind another flight and contact ground control. At spot X we contacted phl ground control in time to hear him clear the other flight to taxi to runway 27L. He instructed our flight to taxi to runway 27L and hold short of runway 27L on taxiway north. After the readback, I followed the other flight closely and crossed runway 27R on taxiway north to runway 27L. There was an unknown airliner on approximately a 2-3 mi final to runway 27R. Approximately 1/2 way to runway 27L, I heard ground control say 'air carrier X since you've already crossed runway 27R you can contact tower, you were told to hold short of runway 27R at taxiway north.' both the first officer and myself said that we heard 'taxi to runway 27L, hold short of runway 27L at taxiway north.' we relayed what we understood our clearance to be to ground control and he told us 'no, you were supposed to hold short of runway 27R.' en route to bos, we were given a phone number and asked to call phl TRACON upon arrival in bos. Upon hearing this, my first officer made the comment, 'they have reviewed the tape and realized we were cleared to taxi to runway 27L and hold short on taxiway north'. After arriving in bos, I called phl TRACON and was told that they did review the tape and it said hold short of runway 27R at taxiway north and that we read back hold short of runway 27R at taxiway north. The controller then asked if we came to phl often and we replied no. He then explained that they usually only cross 1 aircraft at a time. He also said that our crossing caused no problem and they would not seek any action against the crew. I then thanked him for letting us know. In 30 yrs of flying, I've never had a problem arise like this. I have had to verify a clearance, but never seen it where both crew members heard something but perceived just the opposite. We were both positive that we were told to cross runway 27R, and we did visually clear the runway before crossing, noting the traffic on final was at a safe distance for us to cross. Supplemental information from acn 561154: we were at the gate and asked for taxi clearance. We both understood taxi to runway 27L, cross runway 27R at taxiway north, hold short of runway 27L at taxiway north.

Title: AN E135 CREW, TAXIING FOR TKOF AT PHL, MISINTERPED THEIR CLRNC, XING THE PARALLEL WHEN THEY WERE TO HOLD SHORT.

Narrative: ON SEP/THU/02, I WAS THE CAPT OF FLT ABCD FROM PHL TO BOS. WE LEFT THE GATE AND WERE INSTRUCTED BY RAMP CTL TO TAXI TO SPOT X BEHIND ANOTHER FLT AND CONTACT GND CTL. AT SPOT X WE CONTACTED PHL GND CTL IN TIME TO HEAR HIM CLR THE OTHER FLT TO TAXI TO RWY 27L. HE INSTRUCTED OUR FLT TO TAXI TO RWY 27L AND HOLD SHORT OF RWY 27L ON TXWY N. AFTER THE READBACK, I FOLLOWED THE OTHER FLT CLOSELY AND CROSSED RWY 27R ON TXWY N TO RWY 27L. THERE WAS AN UNKNOWN AIRLINER ON APPROX A 2-3 MI FINAL TO RWY 27R. APPROX 1/2 WAY TO RWY 27L, I HEARD GND CTL SAY 'ACR X SINCE YOU'VE ALREADY CROSSED RWY 27R YOU CAN CONTACT TWR, YOU WERE TOLD TO HOLD SHORT OF RWY 27R AT TXWY N.' BOTH THE FO AND MYSELF SAID THAT WE HEARD 'TAXI TO RWY 27L, HOLD SHORT OF RWY 27L AT TXWY N.' WE RELAYED WHAT WE UNDERSTOOD OUR CLRNC TO BE TO GND CTL AND HE TOLD US 'NO, YOU WERE SUPPOSED TO HOLD SHORT OF RWY 27R.' ENRTE TO BOS, WE WERE GIVEN A PHONE NUMBER AND ASKED TO CALL PHL TRACON UPON ARR IN BOS. UPON HEARING THIS, MY FO MADE THE COMMENT, 'THEY HAVE REVIEWED THE TAPE AND REALIZED WE WERE CLRED TO TAXI TO RWY 27L AND HOLD SHORT ON TXWY N'. AFTER ARRIVING IN BOS, I CALLED PHL TRACON AND WAS TOLD THAT THEY DID REVIEW THE TAPE AND IT SAID HOLD SHORT OF RWY 27R AT TXWY N AND THAT WE READ BACK HOLD SHORT OF RWY 27R AT TXWY N. THE CTLR THEN ASKED IF WE CAME TO PHL OFTEN AND WE REPLIED NO. HE THEN EXPLAINED THAT THEY USUALLY ONLY CROSS 1 ACFT AT A TIME. HE ALSO SAID THAT OUR XING CAUSED NO PROB AND THEY WOULD NOT SEEK ANY ACTION AGAINST THE CREW. I THEN THANKED HIM FOR LETTING US KNOW. IN 30 YRS OF FLYING, I'VE NEVER HAD A PROB ARISE LIKE THIS. I HAVE HAD TO VERIFY A CLRNC, BUT NEVER SEEN IT WHERE BOTH CREW MEMBERS HEARD SOMETHING BUT PERCEIVED JUST THE OPPOSITE. WE WERE BOTH POSITIVE THAT WE WERE TOLD TO CROSS RWY 27R, AND WE DID VISUALLY CLR THE RWY BEFORE XING, NOTING THE TFC ON FINAL WAS AT A SAFE DISTANCE FOR US TO CROSS. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 561154: WE WERE AT THE GATE AND ASKED FOR TAXI CLRNC. WE BOTH UNDERSTOOD TAXI TO RWY 27L, CROSS RWY 27R AT TXWY N, HOLD SHORT OF RWY 27L AT TXWY N.
