Narrative:

Aug/mon/02, XA20 hours PST. Wind 230 degrees at 8 KTS. Pressure altitude 7600 ft. Airport -- truckee, ca. Selected landing runway 28, left traffic. Final, 20 degree flaps at 70 KTS. As I crossed over the threshold and numbers, I reduced power and began flare for landing. I heard the stall warning alarm and dropped to the runway surface. I had been holding down right rudder to properly track the plane with the runway. When the tailwind hit the plane, the plane rotated even further to the right. The plane landed hard right and began to go off the runway. I attempted to straighten the plane by braking left, but the plane got up on 2 wheels. I decided to try to get the plane airborne, but landed in the field next to the runway. I learned not to expect to be able to do a go around in high altitude airports.

Title: A C172 PVT PLT, ATTEMPTING A XWIND LNDG AT TRK, DEPARTED THE RWY, ENDING UP IN A FIELD NEXT TO THE RWY.

Narrative: AUG/MON/02, XA20 HRS PST. WIND 230 DEGS AT 8 KTS. PRESSURE ALT 7600 FT. ARPT -- TRUCKEE, CA. SELECTED LNDG RWY 28, L TFC. FINAL, 20 DEG FLAPS AT 70 KTS. AS I CROSSED OVER THE THRESHOLD AND NUMBERS, I REDUCED PWR AND BEGAN FLARE FOR LNDG. I HEARD THE STALL WARNING ALARM AND DROPPED TO THE RWY SURFACE. I HAD BEEN HOLDING DOWN R RUDDER TO PROPERLY TRACK THE PLANE WITH THE RWY. WHEN THE TAILWIND HIT THE PLANE, THE PLANE ROTATED EVEN FURTHER TO THE R. THE PLANE LANDED HARD R AND BEGAN TO GO OFF THE RWY. I ATTEMPTED TO STRAIGHTEN THE PLANE BY BRAKING L, BUT THE PLANE GOT UP ON 2 WHEELS. I DECIDED TO TRY TO GET THE PLANE AIRBORNE, BUT LANDED IN THE FIELD NEXT TO THE RWY. I LEARNED NOT TO EXPECT TO BE ABLE TO DO A GAR IN HIGH ALT ARPTS.
