Narrative:

While approaching to enter the pattern at midfield I was asked by ATC if I saw the other aircraft in the pattern. I responded 'no.' I was instructed by ATC to do a right 360 degrees for spacing. I mistakenly started a left turn. Just as I started the turn I spotted the other aircraft. Immediately turned to the right. The other aircraft also performed evasive maneuvers. A contributing factor to the nearness of the miss was ATC initially trying to contact me by an incorrect tail number. This decreased the time and space and margin of error for evading the other aircraft in the pattern.

Title: NMAC IN THE TFC PATTERN BTWN A C172 ON ENTRY AND CLOSED PATTERN PIPER TFC ON DOWNWIND AT MMU, NJ.

Narrative: WHILE APCHING TO ENTER THE PATTERN AT MIDFIELD I WAS ASKED BY ATC IF I SAW THE OTHER ACFT IN THE PATTERN. I RESPONDED 'NO.' I WAS INSTRUCTED BY ATC TO DO A R 360 DEGS FOR SPACING. I MISTAKENLY STARTED A L TURN. JUST AS I STARTED THE TURN I SPOTTED THE OTHER ACFT. IMMEDIATELY TURNED TO THE R. THE OTHER ACFT ALSO PERFORMED EVASIVE MANEUVERS. A CONTRIBUTING FACTOR TO THE NEARNESS OF THE MISS WAS ATC INITIALLY TRYING TO CONTACT ME BY AN INCORRECT TAIL NUMBER. THIS DECREASED THE TIME AND SPACE AND MARGIN OF ERROR FOR EVADING THE OTHER ACFT IN THE PATTERN.
