Narrative:

Our flight had just pushed back from ind. Ground cleared us to taxi to runway 23R via taxiway H and taxiway P. As I turned the aircraft toward the northwest away from the concourse, I was facing toward taxiway H2 and to my left was a taxiway sign 'H.' so, I continued ahead down taxiway H2 expecting the next taxiway perpendicular to taxiway H2 to be taxiway H -- but it wasn't. ATC boxed us around runway 23R via taxiway H2, taxiway G, and taxiway M. It was my understanding that a taxiway sign of this type was supposed to precede the actual taxiway -- not be placed on the far side of the taxiway so that you have to turn prior to the sign in order to be on the displayed taxiway. It would seem more logical to keep the same sign and location, but reverse the colors to a yellow H and arrows on a black backgnd to let you know you're already on taxiway H.
