Narrative:

I was cleared to take off from the 'relocated threshold.' when I taxied onto the runway, there were orange cones to my left. I assumed that these marked the 'relocated threshold,' when in reality the white line marking the 'relocated threshold' was 500-1000 ft further down the runway. I did not see the white line and commenced takeoff from the end of the runway beginning at the cones. After takeoff, the tower scolded me and said he has seen several aircraft do the same thing recently. I would recommend that the tower provides a better explanation of where the relocated threshold is located to prevent this from recurring. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the reason for temporary relocation of the runway threshold was to eliminate propeller/jetblast from interfering with runway construction taking place east of the approach end to runway 27L.

Title: A C310 PLT, DEPARTING SBN, TOOK OFF FROM THE RWY END INSTEAD OF THE 'RELOCATED THRESHOLD,' AS INSTRUCTED.

Narrative: I WAS CLRED TO TAKE OFF FROM THE 'RELOCATED THRESHOLD.' WHEN I TAXIED ONTO THE RWY, THERE WERE ORANGE CONES TO MY L. I ASSUMED THAT THESE MARKED THE 'RELOCATED THRESHOLD,' WHEN IN REALITY THE WHITE LINE MARKING THE 'RELOCATED THRESHOLD' WAS 500-1000 FT FURTHER DOWN THE RWY. I DID NOT SEE THE WHITE LINE AND COMMENCED TKOF FROM THE END OF THE RWY BEGINNING AT THE CONES. AFTER TKOF, THE TWR SCOLDED ME AND SAID HE HAS SEEN SEVERAL ACFT DO THE SAME THING RECENTLY. I WOULD RECOMMEND THAT THE TWR PROVIDES A BETTER EXPLANATION OF WHERE THE RELOCATED THRESHOLD IS LOCATED TO PREVENT THIS FROM RECURRING. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE REASON FOR TEMPORARY RELOCATION OF THE RWY THRESHOLD WAS TO ELIMINATE PROP/JETBLAST FROM INTERFERING WITH RWY CONSTRUCTION TAKING PLACE E OF THE APCH END TO RWY 27L.
