Narrative:

About 1 hour after departure from ont, at FL330, we first began to smell a faint odd odor in the cockpit. At first we thought it could be from the bush fires but it had a different smell. We queried ATC if any other aircraft had smelled it but they said no. When the flight attendants asked to investigate, they could also smell it and said it was strongest around the wing area. There was no visible smoke in the cabin or cockpit. Shortly afterwards, we had an oil filter 1 clog indication. All other indications were normal. We referred to the aircraft flight manual and talked to our dispatch and maintenance on radio. At this point, we continued the flight with concurrence from dispatch and maintenance as oil filter 1 clog is only a crew awareness item. About 5-10 mins after this, oil pressure went from normal 250 psi to green 330 psi. We again talked to maintenance and dispatch and were leaning towards diverting when the engine failed and automatic shutdown occurred. At that time we diverted to slc, secured the engine, declared an emergency and performed an overweight landing. The landing was non eventful and all other system performed as normal.

Title: A320 CREW HAD #1 ENG FAIL IN ZLC CLASS A AIRSPACE.

Narrative: ABOUT 1 HR AFTER DEP FROM ONT, AT FL330, WE FIRST BEGAN TO SMELL A FAINT ODD ODOR IN THE COCKPIT. AT FIRST WE THOUGHT IT COULD BE FROM THE BUSH FIRES BUT IT HAD A DIFFERENT SMELL. WE QUERIED ATC IF ANY OTHER ACFT HAD SMELLED IT BUT THEY SAID NO. WHEN THE FLT ATTENDANTS ASKED TO INVESTIGATE, THEY COULD ALSO SMELL IT AND SAID IT WAS STRONGEST AROUND THE WING AREA. THERE WAS NO VISIBLE SMOKE IN THE CABIN OR COCKPIT. SHORTLY AFTERWARDS, WE HAD AN OIL FILTER 1 CLOG INDICATION. ALL OTHER INDICATIONS WERE NORMAL. WE REFERRED TO THE ACFT FLT MANUAL AND TALKED TO OUR DISPATCH AND MAINT ON RADIO. AT THIS POINT, WE CONTINUED THE FLT WITH CONCURRENCE FROM DISPATCH AND MAINT AS OIL FILTER 1 CLOG IS ONLY A CREW AWARENESS ITEM. ABOUT 5-10 MINS AFTER THIS, OIL PRESSURE WENT FROM NORMAL 250 PSI TO GREEN 330 PSI. WE AGAIN TALKED TO MAINT AND DISPATCH AND WERE LEANING TOWARDS DIVERTING WHEN THE ENG FAILED AND AUTO SHUTDOWN OCCURRED. AT THAT TIME WE DIVERTED TO SLC, SECURED THE ENG, DECLARED AN EMER AND PERFORMED AN OVERWT LNDG. THE LNDG WAS NON EVENTFUL AND ALL OTHER SYS PERFORMED AS NORMAL.
