Narrative:

ATC vectored us onto the runway 26R localizer at 5000 ft and at an assigned speed. This placed us approximately 2 1/2 mi behind an MD80. ATC then told us to contact the tower at the FAF. Another ATC voice came on frequency and cleared us to 4000 ft asking if we had the preceding aircraft or airport in sight. I called the airport in sight and ATC cleared us for the visual approach. I had the MD80 in sight as well and could also see it on TCASII. However, I did not tell ATC because I wanted the responsibility for separation and wake turbulence considerations to 'officially' remain with ATC (aim paragraph 5-4-20(D)). The first officer was flying the visual 1 DOT high according to the ILS GS and separation was steady at approximately 2 1/2 mi when we momentarily encountered wake turbulence at about 1000 ft AGL. I contemplated a go around, but the encounter was fleeting and smooth air returned. We moved slightly higher on the GS than the 1 DOT and visually landed beyond the MD80's touchdown point but within the touchdown zone of the 9000 ft runway.

Title: CL65 FLC FOLLOWING 2 PT 5 MI BEHIND AN MD80 ON A VISUAL APCH, EXPERIENCED BRIEF WAKE TURB EVEN WHILE REMAINING 1 DOT HIGH ON THE GS.

Narrative: ATC VECTORED US ONTO THE RWY 26R LOC AT 5000 FT AND AT AN ASSIGNED SPD. THIS PLACED US APPROX 2 1/2 MI BEHIND AN MD80. ATC THEN TOLD US TO CONTACT THE TWR AT THE FAF. ANOTHER ATC VOICE CAME ON FREQ AND CLRED US TO 4000 FT ASKING IF WE HAD THE PRECEDING ACFT OR ARPT IN SIGHT. I CALLED THE ARPT IN SIGHT AND ATC CLRED US FOR THE VISUAL APCH. I HAD THE MD80 IN SIGHT AS WELL AND COULD ALSO SEE IT ON TCASII. HOWEVER, I DID NOT TELL ATC BECAUSE I WANTED THE RESPONSIBILITY FOR SEPARATION AND WAKE TURB CONSIDERATIONS TO 'OFFICIALLY' REMAIN WITH ATC (AIM PARAGRAPH 5-4-20(D)). THE FO WAS FLYING THE VISUAL 1 DOT HIGH ACCORDING TO THE ILS GS AND SEPARATION WAS STEADY AT APPROX 2 1/2 MI WHEN WE MOMENTARILY ENCOUNTERED WAKE TURB AT ABOUT 1000 FT AGL. I CONTEMPLATED A GAR, BUT THE ENCOUNTER WAS FLEETING AND SMOOTH AIR RETURNED. WE MOVED SLIGHTLY HIGHER ON THE GS THAN THE 1 DOT AND VISUALLY LANDED BEYOND THE MD80'S TOUCHDOWN POINT BUT WITHIN THE TOUCHDOWN ZONE OF THE 9000 FT RWY.
