Narrative:

200 NM west of jvl VOR, we understood ATC to say 'cross 15 NM west of jvl at FL290.' we responded with 'cross 15 NM west of jvl at, say again altitude?' we again understood ATC to say 'cross 15 mi west of jvl at FL290,' which we responded to exactly. At 125 NM prior to jvl, ATC came back asking to clarify the crossing distance at 115 NM west of jvl. We then said, 'oh, 115 NM, we are starting down now.' we began a best rate of descent down to FL290, at which time ATC cleared us to a new frequency. We checked in with the new ATC controller and told him we were in the descent to FL290. No known conflicts existed, and neither controller seemed concerned.

Narrative: 200 NM W OF JVL VOR, WE UNDERSTOOD ATC TO SAY 'CROSS 15 NM W OF JVL AT FL290.' WE RESPONDED WITH 'CROSS 15 NM W OF JVL AT, SAY AGAIN ALT?' WE AGAIN UNDERSTOOD ATC TO SAY 'CROSS 15 MI W OF JVL AT FL290,' WHICH WE RESPONDED TO EXACTLY. AT 125 NM PRIOR TO JVL, ATC CAME BACK ASKING TO CLARIFY THE XING DISTANCE AT 115 NM W OF JVL. WE THEN SAID, 'OH, 115 NM, WE ARE STARTING DOWN NOW.' WE BEGAN A BEST RATE OF DSCNT DOWN TO FL290, AT WHICH TIME ATC CLRED US TO A NEW FREQ. WE CHKED IN WITH THE NEW ATC CTLR AND TOLD HIM WE WERE IN THE DSCNT TO FL290. NO KNOWN CONFLICTS EXISTED, AND NEITHER CTLR SEEMED CONCERNED.
