Narrative:

Flight plan from sjc to den. Aircraft used had 1 MEL (generator #1). Due to WX we climbed to FL370 to avoid cells. Since generator #1 was MEL'ed, the APU had to be run continuously. About 1 hour into the flight, we got an APU oil temperature caution message, and since we were IMC, declared an emergency and asked for lower altitude. The APU was left running as it was decided as essential. Got vectors towards slc. Called dispatch on SELCAL and landed in slc without any further complications. ZLC and approach provided excellent emergency handling of our flight.
