Narrative:

We were holding our position on the GA ramp. I called for taxi clearance and IFR clearance. The parallel taxiway to runway 6R was closed and runway 6R was being used to taxi to runway 6L. There were men and equipment near taxiway C, intersecting with runway 6R. Ground control gave me the IFR clearance and advised us to hold our position because of inbound traffic. We took a 5 min delay on the ramp. Ground told us to taxi via taxiway C and runway 6R to runway 6L, men and equipment were holding for us. We began to taxi on taxiway C and on to runway 6R. We turned left onto runway 6R. Ground control said, 'I never gave you clearance to taxi on runway 6R, hold your position.' I had read back the taxi instructions and was never corrected by ground. A helicopter was approaching the ramp south of our position, for a landing. There was no incident with the helicopter. Ground control instructed us to continue our taxi to runway 6L.
