Narrative:

I saw aircraft landing over threshold and no one on final. I advised tower I was ready in sequence. I thought tower said position and hold and that is what I thought I read back. When I was in position, tower advised they had said up to and hold short of the runway. I was then cleared for takeoff, no loss of separation occurred. I try to be vigilant and standardized in all my communications. I feel that I must have done what I expected to hear, not what I heard.
