Narrative:

Over mie VOR at FL270, ZAU requested us to climb to FL280. While complying with climb clearance, crew observed traffic on TCASII within 2-3 mi of them, within 200-300 ft and converging vertically and horizontally. Crew was receiving yellow traffic alert as ATC gave us an immediate turn from 180 degrees to 90 degrees. Crew heard ATC questioning other aircraft and ATC realized a conflict was occurring. We disconnected autoplt and did an immediate steep turn to 090 degrees to avoid traffic. ATC seemed confused as to what our altitude was and the other aircraft's altitude. Upon confirmation of our altitude of FL280 and traffic clearance, we were cleared back on course. Appeared ATC and aircraft involved were unclr as to everyone's position and altitude for a very short time.

Narrative: OVER MIE VOR AT FL270, ZAU REQUESTED US TO CLB TO FL280.
