Narrative:
On 04/mon/02, I was on an IFR flight plan in VFR conditions. I was told to take off and climb to the tiffin NDB. Before taking off, I didn't write down my clearance. There was a problem with the radios and I was unable to clearly hear the clearance or squawk code. I had already had my navigation radios set up for the approachs in mansfield, oh, that I was to fly. After taking off, the controller had already cleared me to the tiffin NDB, but I was going to the wrong station. The controller waited until I was more than 10 mi away before he came back to me. This could have been prevented had I written down my clearance. When I had realized the mistake that I had made, I promptly canceled my IFR and returned to the airport. Since this, I have received additional training on instrument flying.

Title: A C172 PLT, DEPARTING TOL, CANCELED HIS IFR FLT PLAN AFTER REALIZING HE WAS NAVING ON THE WRONG NAVAID.
Narrative: ON 04/MON/02, I WAS ON AN IFR FLT PLAN IN VFR CONDITIONS. I WAS TOLD TO TAKE OFF AND CLB TO THE TIFFIN NDB. BEFORE TAKING OFF, I DIDN'T WRITE DOWN MY CLRNC. THERE WAS A PROB WITH THE RADIOS AND I WAS UNABLE TO CLRLY HEAR THE CLRNC OR SQUAWK CODE. I HAD ALREADY HAD MY NAV RADIOS SET UP FOR THE APCHS IN MANSFIELD, OH, THAT I WAS TO FLY. AFTER TAKING OFF, THE CTLR HAD ALREADY CLRED ME TO THE TIFFIN NDB, BUT I WAS GOING TO THE WRONG STATION. THE CTLR WAITED UNTIL I WAS MORE THAN 10 MI AWAY BEFORE HE CAME BACK TO ME. THIS COULD HAVE BEEN PREVENTED HAD I WRITTEN DOWN MY CLRNC. WHEN I HAD REALIZED THE MISTAKE THAT I HAD MADE, I PROMPTLY CANCELED MY IFR AND RETURNED TO THE ARPT. SINCE THIS, I HAVE RECEIVED ADDITIONAL TRAINING ON INST FLYING.
