Narrative:

I was flying with my instructor and I was under the hood practicing instrument holding. My instructor was responsible for radio communication and looking outside for traffic. He contacted daytona approach control for holding over satellite NDB at melbourne, fl. ATC told him he was cleared to hold. After 5 mins of holding and going through clouds (according to my instructor) he contacted ATC and requested to cancel IFR clearance and land at melbourne. ATC said that we were not cleared for IFR. They said they didn't mention the word 'IFR' and my instructor assumed that we were cleared based on our clearance to hold.
