Narrative:
I received an IFR clearance from avp ground at about XA15 which said, 'cleared radar vectors as filed seg direct jst,' etc. I was not issued the SID and was cruising at 16000 ft when the ZNY controller said he hadn't cleared me on course. I had turned direct seg in lieu of alternate instructions. He asked me to explain and I told him I hadn't been issued the SID or a vector. I followed my clearance. A lot of ambiguity. I'll be sure to query the controller in the future.

Narrative: I RECEIVED AN IFR CLRNC FROM AVP GND AT ABOUT XA15 WHICH SAID, 'CLRED RADAR VECTORS AS FILED SEG DIRECT JST,' ETC. I WAS NOT ISSUED THE SID AND WAS CRUISING AT 16000 FT WHEN THE ZNY CTLR SAID HE HADN'T CLRED ME ON COURSE. I HAD TURNED DIRECT SEG IN LIEU OF ALTERNATE INSTRUCTIONS. HE ASKED ME TO EXPLAIN AND I TOLD HIM I HADN'T BEEN ISSUED THE SID OR A VECTOR. I FOLLOWED MY CLRNC. A LOT OF AMBIGUITY. I'LL BE SURE TO QUERY THE CTLR IN THE FUTURE.
