Narrative:

Air carrier flight xx en route from dtw-fra. So announced that #3 oil quantity was dropping rapidly, followed by oil pressure dropping. Shut down #3 engine using appropriate shutdown checklist. Descended to FL250 from FL330. Declared emergency, notified dispatch. They requested us to divert to amsterdam, first officer, which was now less than 400 mi away. Because of airport familiarity of ams, thought best course of action was to proceed to ams they have maintenance there, and could deal with our passenger. Although this was not the nearest suitable airport, with 1 engine out on a 3 engine aircraft, I felt it was safe to continue to ams.
