Narrative:

A few mi from krena, ord controller said 'direct ahead.' I was puzzled by the term 'direct ahead' so I paused to query. The radio was blocked by multiple xmissions. After the radio chatter cleared, I asked ord if we were cleared direct ahead? He said yes, and I answered 'aircraft Y heavy cleared present heading.' after a few mins, ord came back to us and asked if we were going direct chicago. We told him we verified twice that he wanted us to go present heading. He then vectored us around a departing aircraft (maybe 20 mi from us). The rest of the approach was uneventful. This is a case of communication breakdown and what I thought at the time was nonstandard phraseology.
