Narrative:

We were on a close-in right base for runway 27 at lal airport. ATC had cleared us for the visual approach and handed us off to lal tower. As we began to turn to final, the tower queried us as to our location. I (PNF) responded we were about a 5 mi right base, turning final. The tower advised us to square our base and follow traffic on final. The tower advised us to square our base and follow traffic on final. At this time, the PF saw our traffic on his left and knew squaring our base would have resulted in a collision. He diverted away from the traffic to the right. The tower saw us take evasive action and directed us now to square off our base for a landing on runway 23. I immediately set up a visual picture for the PF on the mfd and advised him accordingly to help him visualize where to fly. I repeated to him to keep flying to the right to square off a left base for runway 23. He ignored me and turned to the left to land on runway 27. Of course, by now we were overhead the airport. The tower saw what was happening and advised us to continue on to a left circle-to-land on runway 27. Once we were established on final for runway 27, the PF said he realized he was wrong to try to land on runway 27, but for some reason in his mind he didn't hear runway 23, only runway 27. The tower never asked us to call. However, I am writing this to be cautious and as an explanation of what happened. The PF clearly did not follow the tower's instructions or my repeated reiterations of the tower's instructions.

Title: FLC ON VISUAL APCH LINES UP FOR WRONG RWY. CRM, RESOURCE MGMNT DIFFICULTIES.

Narrative: WE WERE ON A CLOSE-IN R BASE FOR RWY 27 AT LAL ARPT. ATC HAD CLRED US FOR THE VISUAL APCH AND HANDED US OFF TO LAL TWR. AS WE BEGAN TO TURN TO FINAL, THE TWR QUERIED US AS TO OUR LOCATION. I (PNF) RESPONDED WE WERE ABOUT A 5 MI R BASE, TURNING FINAL. THE TWR ADVISED US TO SQUARE OUR BASE AND FOLLOW TFC ON FINAL. THE TWR ADVISED US TO SQUARE OUR BASE AND FOLLOW TFC ON FINAL. AT THIS TIME, THE PF SAW OUR TFC ON HIS L AND KNEW SQUARING OUR BASE WOULD HAVE RESULTED IN A COLLISION. HE DIVERTED AWAY FROM THE TFC TO THE R. THE TWR SAW US TAKE EVASIVE ACTION AND DIRECTED US NOW TO SQUARE OFF OUR BASE FOR A LNDG ON RWY 23. I IMMEDIATELY SET UP A VISUAL PICTURE FOR THE PF ON THE MFD AND ADVISED HIM ACCORDINGLY TO HELP HIM VISUALIZE WHERE TO FLY. I REPEATED TO HIM TO KEEP FLYING TO THE R TO SQUARE OFF A L BASE FOR RWY 23. HE IGNORED ME AND TURNED TO THE L TO LAND ON RWY 27. OF COURSE, BY NOW WE WERE OVERHEAD THE ARPT. THE TWR SAW WHAT WAS HAPPENING AND ADVISED US TO CONTINUE ON TO A L CIRCLE-TO-LAND ON RWY 27. ONCE WE WERE ESTABLISHED ON FINAL FOR RWY 27, THE PF SAID HE REALIZED HE WAS WRONG TO TRY TO LAND ON RWY 27, BUT FOR SOME REASON IN HIS MIND HE DIDN'T HEAR RWY 23, ONLY RWY 27. THE TWR NEVER ASKED US TO CALL. HOWEVER, I AM WRITING THIS TO BE CAUTIOUS AND AS AN EXPLANATION OF WHAT HAPPENED. THE PF CLRLY DID NOT FOLLOW THE TWR'S INSTRUCTIONS OR MY REPEATED REITERATIONS OF THE TWR'S INSTRUCTIONS.
