Narrative:

We started our engines and did our usual pre-taxi checks and got cleared to taxi to runway 33. I was the PF (taxiing). My first officer was new to the position and somewhat unfamiliar or not quick enough (I thought) in getting the GPS receiver set up. So while taxiing, I let myself become involved with putting the waypoints (fixes) into the GPS receiver. So as I made the turn from the taxiway to the start of runway 33 I inadvertently went across the hold short line by some 50 ft. I discovered this and I immediately stopped. Fortunately, there was no inbound or outbound traffic. About that time, the ground controller admonished me and cleared me across the runway to the other side taxiway where I could make a 180 degree turn and taxi back and hold short. When we were ready for takeoff, we were cleared to go. Corrective actions: in the future, after obtaining our clearance, I will load or oversee loading of the GPS before taxiing. Then subsequently while taxiing, I will maintain full attention to the job of moving the aircraft and not involve myself with flight navigation until I stop the aircraft and then review navigation and communication issues.

Title: A BE20 CREW, TAXIING FOR TKOF AT DET, TAXIED PAST THE HOLD SHORT LINE.

Narrative: WE STARTED OUR ENGS AND DID OUR USUAL PRE-TAXI CHKS AND GOT CLRED TO TAXI TO RWY 33. I WAS THE PF (TAXIING). MY FO WAS NEW TO THE POS AND SOMEWHAT UNFAMILIAR OR NOT QUICK ENOUGH (I THOUGHT) IN GETTING THE GPS RECEIVER SET UP. SO WHILE TAXIING, I LET MYSELF BECOME INVOLVED WITH PUTTING THE WAYPOINTS (FIXES) INTO THE GPS RECEIVER. SO AS I MADE THE TURN FROM THE TXWY TO THE START OF RWY 33 I INADVERTENTLY WENT ACROSS THE HOLD SHORT LINE BY SOME 50 FT. I DISCOVERED THIS AND I IMMEDIATELY STOPPED. FORTUNATELY, THERE WAS NO INBOUND OR OUTBOUND TFC. ABOUT THAT TIME, THE GND CTLR ADMONISHED ME AND CLRED ME ACROSS THE RWY TO THE OTHER SIDE TXWY WHERE I COULD MAKE A 180 DEG TURN AND TAXI BACK AND HOLD SHORT. WHEN WE WERE READY FOR TKOF, WE WERE CLRED TO GO. CORRECTIVE ACTIONS: IN THE FUTURE, AFTER OBTAINING OUR CLRNC, I WILL LOAD OR OVERSEE LOADING OF THE GPS BEFORE TAXIING. THEN SUBSEQUENTLY WHILE TAXIING, I WILL MAINTAIN FULL ATTN TO THE JOB OF MOVING THE ACFT AND NOT INVOLVE MYSELF WITH FLT NAV UNTIL I STOP THE ACFT AND THEN REVIEW NAV AND COM ISSUES.
