Narrative:

I was the PNF captain directing taxiing. Taxi route was extremely simple -- left on taxiway a to end, that's the start of assigned runway 29. My first officer on this flight was not a person sharp on planning ahead. My mistake was in not involving him in the taxi process because I felt he would be of little use. The end result: at the end of taxiway a and beginning of runway 29 I inexplicably made a left turn and headed towards runway 23. Ground control asked what I was doing, reassigned us to runway 23. Although ground control assured 'no problem,' I am writing because of risk of runway and taxiway incursions. My resolve: regardless of my opinion of first officer's interest and ability, I will review taxi route and chart with him and ask for cooperative work on sticking to the plan

Narrative: I WAS THE PNF CAPT DIRECTING TAXIING. TAXI RTE WAS EXTREMELY SIMPLE -- L ON TXWY A TO END, THAT'S THE START OF ASSIGNED RWY 29. MY FO ON THIS FLT WAS NOT A PERSON SHARP ON PLANNING AHEAD. MY MISTAKE WAS IN NOT INVOLVING HIM IN THE TAXI PROCESS BECAUSE I FELT HE WOULD BE OF LITTLE USE. THE END RESULT: AT THE END OF TXWY A AND BEGINNING OF RWY 29 I INEXPLICABLY MADE A L TURN AND HEADED TOWARDS RWY 23. GND CTL ASKED WHAT I WAS DOING, REASSIGNED US TO RWY 23. ALTHOUGH GND CTL ASSURED 'NO PROB,' I AM WRITING BECAUSE OF RISK OF RWY AND TXWY INCURSIONS. MY RESOLVE: REGARDLESS OF MY OPINION OF FO'S INTEREST AND ABILITY, I WILL REVIEW TAXI RTE AND CHART WITH HIM AND ASK FOR COOPERATIVE WORK ON STICKING TO THE PLAN
