Narrative:

While on a SID en route from sjc, I failed to follow the SID correctly. I made an early left turn and departure control then vectored me to rejoin the departure. No priority was given or needed. This was due to my accepting a clearance and then finding that I did not have a current plate for the departure assigned. I had flown this departure before and believed that I had it memorized. I was wrong. This was the wrong thing to do and I realize that I had compromised safety by my actions. The correct action would have been to contact clearance and obtain a revised clearance before departing after I discovered the missing plate. I am normally a very competent pilot. I feel that overconfidence and being in a hurry to depart contributed to this event.
