Narrative:

Being vectored for runway 9L ILS at fll at 4000 ft MSL, about 17 NM on downwind. Approach gave us a turn to 180 degrees and look for traffic. I was instructing student first officer on the FMC when he stated we were cleared to 3000 ft MSL and started down. At about 3600 ft MSL, TCASII alerted to stop descent. Stopped descent and traffic disappeared. Approach asked if we had airport in sight and cleared us for visual approach runway 9L. Nothing further was said from approach and we landed normally. While I was distraction in my teaching, I could not in my own mind verify the clearance to 3000 ft. Traffic was a pop-up, nothing we were showing prior to TCASII alert. First officer was positive clearance to 3000 ft MSL was received. Task saturation teaching, explaining FMC approach procedures, and looking for the jet we were to follow at 2 O'clock position diverted my attention.

I WAS INSTRUCTING STUDENT FO ON THE FMC WHEN HE STATED WE WERE CLRED TO 3000 FT MSL AND STARTED DOWN. AT ABOUT 3600 FT MSL, TCASII ALERTED TO STOP DSCNT. STOPPED DSCNT AND TFC DISAPPEARED. APCH ASKED IF WE HAD ARPT IN SIGHT AND CLRED US FOR VISUAL APCH RWY 9L. NOTHING FURTHER WAS SAID FROM APCH AND WE LANDED NORMALLY. WHILE I WAS DISTR IN MY TEACHING, I COULD NOT IN MY OWN MIND VERIFY THE CLRNC TO 3000 FT. TFC WAS A POP-UP, NOTHING WE WERE SHOWING PRIOR TO TCASII ALERT. FO WAS POSITIVE CLRNC TO 3000 FT MSL WAS RECEIVED. TASK SATURATION TEACHING, EXPLAINING FMC APCH PROCS, AND LOOKING FOR THE JET WE WERE TO FOLLOW AT 2 O'CLOCK POS DIVERTED MY ATTN.
