Narrative:

While taxiing to runway 1R aircraft partially crossed hole line to runway without clearance from tower. Captain immediately stopped aircraft and contacted tower. No conflict with other aircraft occurred as runway 1R was being used for takeoffs only. Also there were very few takeoffs and lndgs going on at the time. Chain of events: 1) crew had a short taxi time. 2) 3 frequency changes. 3) first officer was head down busy with checklists. Event was discovered when captain realized crew wasn't on tower frequency. In the future, must take more time before takeoff. Examples: 1) slow down. 2) hold on ramp. Human performance considerations: 1) captain and first officer had never flown together. 2) crew had a very short night's rest. 3) first officer was new and unfamiliar with airport. 4) with each frequency change volume needs to be adjusted which can be awkward when busy. Supplemental information from acn 535152: I was running the taxi checklist and hadn't noticed we had passed the hold short line until we were well onto the runway.

Title: AN MD80 CREW, TAXIING FOR TKOF AT SFO, TAXIED PAST A HOLD SHORT LINE.

Narrative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
