Narrative:

#1 engine failure. #1 engine shuddered and vibrated when throttle was reduced for an intermediate descent while en route from ZZZ to chicago. Engine failure indications and automated warnings were noted and engine shutdown was initiated. During shutdown procedure, an engine overtemp and exceedance occurred. Peak temperature noted was a 925 degree egt. A decision was made to divert to detroit. The descent and landing were uneventful.
