Narrative:

At approximately XA20 after landing on runway 3 at sackman field, the engine on the chief quit during the rollout. I was close to the taxiway entrance, so I got out of the airplane and pulled it off the runway onto the taxiway. My intention was to restart the engine to taxi it back to the hangar. After reaching the taxiway, I chocked the wheels on both sides, but did not tie down the tail as there was nothing to tie it to in the area. The first time I spun the propeller, the engine did not catch, so I went back to the cockpit, gave it 1 shot of prime and cracked the throttle slightly. I then went back to the front of the plane and threw the propeller again. The engine caught and the plane slowly began to move forward. I was unable to reach the cockpit in time to retard the throttle before the plane went over the chocks and got away from me. It came to rest in the adjacent field. It did not leave the ground, but spun around in several circles until the landing gear collapsed and the engine stopped.

Title: AERONCA CHIEF PLT LOST CTL OF ACFT AFTER STARTING THE ENG BY HAND PROPPING RESULTING IN THE ACFT JUMPING THE WHEEL CHOCKS AND COMING TO STOP IN AN ADJACENT FIELD. THE ACFT'S LNDG GEAR COLLAPSED AND THE ENG STOPPED WHEN THE PROP STRUCK THE GND. IT DID NOT BECOME AIRBORNE.

Narrative: AT APPROX XA20 AFTER LNDG ON RWY 3 AT SACKMAN FIELD, THE ENG ON THE CHIEF QUIT DURING THE ROLLOUT. I WAS CLOSE TO THE TXWY ENTRANCE, SO I GOT OUT OF THE AIRPLANE AND PULLED IT OFF THE RWY ONTO THE TXWY. MY INTENTION WAS TO RESTART THE ENG TO TAXI IT BACK TO THE HANGAR. AFTER REACHING THE TXWY, I CHOCKED THE WHEELS ON BOTH SIDES, BUT DID NOT TIE DOWN THE TAIL AS THERE WAS NOTHING TO TIE IT TO IN THE AREA. THE FIRST TIME I SPUN THE PROP, THE ENG DID NOT CATCH, SO I WENT BACK TO THE COCKPIT, GAVE IT 1 SHOT OF PRIME AND CRACKED THE THROTTLE SLIGHTLY. I THEN WENT BACK TO THE FRONT OF THE PLANE AND THREW THE PROP AGAIN. THE ENG CAUGHT AND THE PLANE SLOWLY BEGAN TO MOVE FORWARD. I WAS UNABLE TO REACH THE COCKPIT IN TIME TO RETARD THE THROTTLE BEFORE THE PLANE WENT OVER THE CHOCKS AND GOT AWAY FROM ME. IT CAME TO REST IN THE ADJACENT FIELD. IT DID NOT LEAVE THE GND, BUT SPUN AROUND IN SEVERAL CIRCLES UNTIL THE LNDG GEAR COLLAPSED AND THE ENG STOPPED.
