Narrative:

During takeoff roll, the aft flight attendant attempted to contact us via the emergency interphone call system (3 dings) by repeatedly and hastily pressing the call button. This occurred at approximately 110 KTS, and resembled a malfunctioning or shorted electrical signal. We disregarded the apparently minor malfunction and continued the takeoff. After liftoff and gear retraction, the so finally responded to the persistent call signals and spoke to the aft flight attendant. At this time we first became aware that the flight attendants had what they considered to be an emergency situation. We immediately began a diversion back to the orlando field for landing, but just as quickly we were again contacted by the aft flight attendant who said the problem was resolved and the cabin was clear of smoke/fumes. We returned to our original flight plan clearance to ind. This incident brings up 2 concerns. The first is an apparent misunderstanding of how to properly use the call system to alert the flight deck of an emergency. The correct procedure at our airline is 3 dings, not continuous rapid dinging (which resembles a malfunctioning system). The second concern is that food cooking in the galley ovens would leak and burn starting the smoke and a potential fire. More attention should be placed on how food is prepared for aircraft ovens so as to eliminate fire hazards.

Title: A B727 CREW, ON TKOF ROLL AT MCO, EXPERIENCED WHAT THEY THOUGHT WAS AN ELECTRICAL SHORT IN THE CALL SYS CAUSING IT TO CONTINUOUSLY RING.

Narrative: DURING TKOF ROLL, THE AFT FLT ATTENDANT ATTEMPTED TO CONTACT US VIA THE EMER INTERPHONE CALL SYS (3 DINGS) BY REPEATEDLY AND HASTILY PRESSING THE CALL BUTTON. THIS OCCURRED AT APPROX 110 KTS, AND RESEMBLED A MALFUNCTIONING OR SHORTED ELECTRICAL SIGNAL. WE DISREGARDED THE APPARENTLY MINOR MALFUNCTION AND CONTINUED THE TKOF. AFTER LIFTOFF AND GEAR RETRACTION, THE SO FINALLY RESPONDED TO THE PERSISTENT CALL SIGNALS AND SPOKE TO THE AFT FLT ATTENDANT. WE IMMEDIATELY BEGAN A DIVERSION BACK TO THE ORLANDO FIELD FOR LNDG, BUT JUST AS QUICKLY WE WERE AGAIN CONTACTED BY THE AFT FLT ATTENDANT WHO SAID THE PROB WAS RESOLVED AND THE CABIN WAS CLR OF SMOKE/FUMES. WE RETURNED TO OUR ORIGINAL FLT PLAN CLRNC TO IND. THIS INCIDENT BRINGS UP 2 CONCERNS. THE FIRST IS AN APPARENT MISUNDERSTANDING OF HOW TO PROPERLY USE THE CALL SYS TO ALERT THE FLT DECK OF AN EMER.
