Narrative:

I briefed the captain on a runway 25 departure at yqt. During the brief, we discussed the thunderbay 5 departure procedure. Upon receiving our taxi clearance, we were instructed to change runways to '7.' I then made an amendment to the original brief by adding the noise abatement procedure for runway '7' (climbing to 3400 ft before proceeding on course). We departed '7' and complied with the noise abatement procedure. After 3400 ft, on a 300 degree heading, I turned left to 210 degrees to intercept the 234 degree radial (yqt)(V-13). Out of 4000 ft, I advised the captain to contact 'departure.' he made contact with them and they advised us that we made an unauthorized turn from the thunderbay 5 departure procedure. The controller said something like 'since it's early, it is no big deal, but for future reference, fly runway heading and they will call the turn on course.' the confusion I had with the noise abatement procedure is that the wording tells me to climb to 3400 ft asl before proceeding on course. I now know to fly the runway heading and let the controller call my turn.

Title: AN LTT CREW, DEPARTING CYQT, FLEW THE NOISE ABATEMENT PROC INSTEAD OF THE FILED SID.

Narrative: I BRIEFED THE CAPT ON A RWY 25 DEP AT YQT. DURING THE BRIEF, WE DISCUSSED THE THUNDERBAY 5 DEP PROC. UPON RECEIVING OUR TAXI CLRNC, WE WERE INSTRUCTED TO CHANGE RWYS TO '7.' I THEN MADE AN AMENDMENT TO THE ORIGINAL BRIEF BY ADDING THE NOISE ABATEMENT PROC FOR RWY '7' (CLBING TO 3400 FT BEFORE PROCEEDING ON COURSE). WE DEPARTED '7' AND COMPLIED WITH THE NOISE ABATEMENT PROC. AFTER 3400 FT, ON A 300 DEG HDG, I TURNED L TO 210 DEGS TO INTERCEPT THE 234 DEG RADIAL (YQT)(V-13). OUT OF 4000 FT, I ADVISED THE CAPT TO CONTACT 'DEP.' HE MADE CONTACT WITH THEM AND THEY ADVISED US THAT WE MADE AN UNAUTH TURN FROM THE THUNDERBAY 5 DEP PROC. THE CTLR SAID SOMETHING LIKE 'SINCE IT'S EARLY, IT IS NO BIG DEAL, BUT FOR FUTURE REF, FLY RWY HEADING AND THEY WILL CALL THE TURN ON COURSE.' THE CONFUSION I HAD WITH THE NOISE ABATEMENT PROC IS THAT THE WORDING TELLS ME TO CLB TO 3400 FT ASL BEFORE PROCEEDING ON COURSE. I NOW KNOW TO FLY THE RWY HEADING AND LET THE CTLR CALL MY TURN.
