Narrative:

Just after switching to lax tower while taxiing to runway 25R on taxiway B, tower cleared us to taxi full length and position and hold. Clearance read back by first officer. Approaching taxiway F, tower cleared aircraft for takeoff. First officer read back clearance to take off on runway 25R. First officer set standard power and removed hands from throttles. After approximately 70 KTS, tower stated position and hold. The captain aborted flight prior to rejected takeoff being engaged. Tower said that we were not cleared for takeoff. We cleared the runway 25R and were issued clearance to taxi full length and hold short. The flight was cleared and the takeoff was uneventful. The captain called back to tower when we were above 18000 ft. The controller said that they checked the tapes and it was his mistake. If there is a question, then the conservative call should be made. The controller made the right call to stop the takeoff at the slow speed.
