Narrative:

When ready to taxi, we called worcester ground control and requested taxi clearance. We were given clearance to taxi to runway 29. We proceeded down taxiway B, crossed runway 29 and held short of runway 29 on taxiway a. When approximately 3/4 of the way across runway 29, the controller remarked 'thanks for the call to cross runway 29.' he then added 'maybe you should read your FARS.' at this, the first officer questioned the clearance with me. I confirmed the instruction to taxi to runway 29. After reviewing the aim (section 4-3-18 #5) I should have held short of runway 29 at taxiway B. In the best interest of safety, holding instructions or clearance to cross any runway needs to be given when taxi instructions are issued. This would eliminate any confusion regarding the clearance from the start of taxi to the hold short point just before taking the runway for takeoff.

Title: B727 CREW AT ORH CROSSED RWY WITHOUT PROPER CLRNC.

Narrative: WHEN READY TO TAXI, WE CALLED WORCESTER GND CTL AND REQUESTED TAXI CLRNC. WE WERE GIVEN CLRNC TO TAXI TO RWY 29. WE PROCEEDED DOWN TXWY B, CROSSED RWY 29 AND HELD SHORT OF RWY 29 ON TXWY A. WHEN APPROX 3/4 OF THE WAY ACROSS RWY 29, THE CTLR REMARKED 'THANKS FOR THE CALL TO CROSS RWY 29.' HE THEN ADDED 'MAYBE YOU SHOULD READ YOUR FARS.' AT THIS, THE FO QUESTIONED THE CLRNC WITH ME. I CONFIRMED THE INSTRUCTION TO TAXI TO RWY 29. AFTER REVIEWING THE AIM (SECTION 4-3-18 #5) I SHOULD HAVE HELD SHORT OF RWY 29 AT TXWY B. IN THE BEST INTEREST OF SAFETY, HOLDING INSTRUCTIONS OR CLRNC TO CROSS ANY RWY NEEDS TO BE GIVEN WHEN TAXI INSTRUCTIONS ARE ISSUED. THIS WOULD ELIMINATE ANY CONFUSION REGARDING THE CLRNC FROM THE START OF TAXI TO THE HOLD SHORT POINT JUST BEFORE TAKING THE RWY FOR TKOF.
