Narrative:

Departed cgx initially direct gipper and was climbing to FL240. Accomplished FL180 checklist between 17500 ft and FL180, and shortly thereafter, pilot's windshield outer pane shattered. Accomplished emergency checklist, the informed ZAU of problem. Although poh allows continuing to destination, elected to perform precautionary landing at nearest suitable airport. ZAU suggested sbn, and I diverted to sbn, cleared direct. ATC extremely helpful. Accomplished uneventful ILS runway 9R and landed at sbn. Windshield developed more cracks prior to landing, probably just relieving stress.
