Narrative:

I reported to maintenance that our left wing illumination light was inoperative. I saw a mechanic check the physical condition of the correct light before a deferral was made for continuing with the light inoperative. En route, I received a message from ZZZ that the wrong light had been deferred. If we had access to the MEL we could doublechk these things.

Title: A B737-500 WAS DISPATCHED IN NON COMPLIANCE WITH A L WING ILLUMINATION LIGHT DEFERRED INOP BUT LOG ENTRY HAS WRONG LIGHT DEFERRED.

Narrative: I RPTED TO MAINT THAT OUR L WING ILLUMINATION LIGHT WAS INOP. I SAW A MECH CHK THE PHYSICAL CONDITION OF THE CORRECT LIGHT BEFORE A DEFERRAL WAS MADE FOR CONTINUING WITH THE LIGHT INOP. ENRTE, I RECEIVED A MESSAGE FROM ZZZ THAT THE WRONG LIGHT HAD BEEN DEFERRED. IF WE HAD ACCESS TO THE MEL WE COULD DOUBLECHK THESE THINGS.
