Narrative:

Visual approach flown to clt, following another aircraft. Cleared runway at E4 and joined east. After delay, asked tower if we should switch to ground. Tower directed us to contact ground. When ground was contacted, were told to hold short of runway 23. At that point we were already on runway 23 and informed ground. Spoke with tower supervisor on phone as requested. He indicated there was no runway incursion and no further action was necessary.

Title: MD88 CREW WAS ALREADY PAST THE RWY HOLD SHORT POINT WHEN GND CTL GAVE A HOLD SHORT CLRNC.

Narrative: VISUAL APCH FLOWN TO CLT, FOLLOWING ANOTHER ACFT. CLRED RWY AT E4 AND JOINED E. AFTER DELAY, ASKED TWR IF WE SHOULD SWITCH TO GND. TWR DIRECTED US TO CONTACT GND. WHEN GND WAS CONTACTED, WERE TOLD TO HOLD SHORT OF RWY 23. AT THAT POINT WE WERE ALREADY ON RWY 23 AND INFORMED GND. SPOKE WITH TWR SUPVR ON PHONE AS REQUESTED. HE INDICATED THERE WAS NO RWY INCURSION AND NO FURTHER ACTION WAS NECESSARY.
