Narrative:

At the gate in ZZZ found that maintenance wrote up rudder ratio message on EICAS during overnight. Referred MEL and discovered that maintenance had not performed a preflight check to dispatch flight. Called maintenance and they did the check. En route we got thinking about the write-up compared to the actual fault. Maintenance deferred the item as per MEL 27-07 which really defers the rudder ratio light on the overhead panel, not EICAS. We notified ZZZ2 maintenance to correct the suspected error. Captain later called maintenance to see if we read logbook/MEL correctly. ZZZ3 said we were correct, that the deferral via 27-07 was wrong.
