Narrative:
Flying for pleasure with the ultralight guys at ZZZ. I had strayed out over the desert southwest of the airport. Coming back, the engine (rotax 582) failed at 800 ft AGL. I landed on a very rough dirt road, folding the landing gear and snapping off our propeller blade. I walked away without a scratch. I walked to the airport(3 mi), got the truck and trailer, and went back with a couple of friends to get the plane. Highway patrol had already been there and had reported the event to the FSDO. Examination of the fuel system revealed that a very fine strainer, integral to the shutoff valve at the tank, was severely plugged. The screen has been removed. The large in-line filter was clean but will be changed anyway.
